Here Come the Kerr Taylors! Early car owners in Auckland.
"Look out! Here come the Kerr Taylors!" This exclamation reportedly heard at the approach of Alberton's three Kerr Taylor sisters in their crimson Chevrolet was made not because they drove fast, but because they drove so slowly!
Mid last century the slightly eccentric sisters in their 'funny old car' were a familiar sight about town. The youngest, Muriel, the only one tall enough to see over the dashboard, was always the driver and had particular motoring habits including never driving in the rain.
Curated for Auckland Heritage Festival 2017, this small exhibition looks at the first vehicles that took to the roads in Auckland, what it was like to drive and own a car before 1950 and how cars shaped the urban landscape.
On the weekends of 30 September & 1 October and 14 & 15 October, vintage Chevrolets will be on display for photo opportunities, coinciding with a Devonshire Tea Service ($6 for tea and scones).
