Artist Bepen Bhana refers to pop culture in his realist paintings.
In this exhibition, Hymn for the Weak End, a video by Coldplay featuring Beyoncé is a starting point for looking at cultural appropriation.
As soon as it was released, the video was accused of exoticisation for its stereotypical portrayal of Indian society.
For his suite of paintings, Bhana focuses on the contradictory role of Beyoncé, an African American woman dressed as a Bollywood star in a full desi bridal sari, elaborate matrimonial headdress, jewellery and henna tattoos on her hands, with her gestures imitating movements from Indian classical and spiritual dance.
Please note: there is no official opening for this exhibition. Join us at Fresh Gallery Ōtara for the public programmes below.
