O le Malaga refers to the notion of a journey – in this case, both personal and collective journeys.
Ana Teofilo’s exhibition by this name features a selection of paintings made over the past few years that are based around her heritage and Fa’a Samoa.
Both Christianity and ‘aiga/family are central to Fa’a Samoa.
Large circular paintings represent the artist’s grandfather, while smaller works refer to her current pregnancy.
The tondo, or circular format, is a metaphor for Teofilo’s ‘circle of life’ and family relationships.
The paintings also reference music, carving and tatau; and they feature strong colour, patterning, texture drawing on cultural meanings and ancestry.
