The Wizard of Ōtāhuhu – Dorothy’s adventure, south Auckland style.

The Wizard of Ōtāhuhu is an outrageous twist on the children’s story The Wizard of Oz, performed with a south Auckland flavour.

Dorothy and her dog Koko face a long journey home after Cyclone Tita’s fury has landed them in a village of wonder and mystery. Dorothy discovers their only way home to Māngere, is to ask for help from the Wizard of Ōtāhuhu. However, she begins to like this new world a little too much when she makes friends with a brainless Scarecrow, a singing Lion and a rejected Robot, who decide to join her on her quest to find the famous wizard. But Koko can sense danger beyond the parade on Great South Road.

As the group of friends travel along cheerfully they encounter not just one Wicked Witch, but four, who will stop at nothing to prevent them from reaching their destination. Can Aunty Sila come to Dorothy’s rescue again? Possibly not!

And if those witches get any closer, you can bet, there’ll be the show-down of the century.

The Wizard of Ōtāhuhu is a must-see theatre production for this April School Holidays and another clever fairy-tale makeover from Māngere Arts Centre – Ngā Tohu o Uenuku, supported by the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board. After their smash hit Mirror Mirror in 2017, this company won ‘Best Overall Production’ at the Auckland Theatre Awards.

Since 2014, Alison Quigan and Troy Tuua have co-directed a new production each year, this time bringing a 50-strong cast and crew team together to prepare yet again a spectacle of dance and music. From rap to gospel, hip hop to high kicks and wrestling moves, The Wizard of Ōtāhuhu is full of energy and humour that will have you laughing and wanting to get up and join in!

This is a show for the whole family and a true south Auckland community collaboration.
