Captivating Clarinet Concerto.

There is no better match for the most charming instrument of the orchestra – the clarinet – than the equally charismatic Andreas Ottensamer.

As the Principal Clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic, this talented Austro-Hungarian musician will be joining the APO for Weber’s delightful Clarinet Concerto No.1.

Copland’s Quiet City was written for a 1939 play of the same name, about a troubled trumpet player who felt he had lost himself through a pursuit of material success.

His only opportunity to express his anguish was through playing music at night, when the city was quiet.

Wrapping up the evening is Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5 - a powerful symphony packed with subtle political references, hidden parodies and a wide range of emotional endeavours.

The 1937 premiere of this legendary piece was so successful, it received a 30-minute standing ovation.

Pre-concert talk by Kerry Stevens at 7.15pm in the Supper Room.
