First pick-ups for new inorganic waste collection

The council has a new way of collecting inorganic waste. It sees charities and community recyclers make the most of Aucklanders' pre-loved possessions.

With a new booking system in place, reusable materials will be collected separately from your property and given a second life, instead of going straight to landfill.

We are working with community groups and organisations across the region to make the most of reusable items, while helping them increase their financial independence.

"Our communities are gearing up to use waste as a resource. They’re seeing the potential to grow their income stream through selling goods and running community education programmes, while developing job and training opportunities for local people,” says Ian Stupple, Waste Solutions Manager.

“With potential for better economic, social and environmental outcomes for everyone, we’re doing all we can to help fan the flame of the entrepreneurial spirit that is out there.”

Our long-term plan is to have 10 community recycling centres around the region. Waiuku and Helensville are ready to go, and a facility in Devonport is currently in negotiation.

"The new inorganic collection service will provide us with the materials we need to get things happening, and bring Aucklanders one step closer to our goal of zero waste by 2040."

About the new inorganic collection service

  • It starts this year in parts of legacy Waitakere, Rodney and North Shore, and will roll out to the remaining areas and the region from February 2016.

  • The service can be booked online, by calling us or at a service centre (details can be found on flyers).
  • The booking period of the service is open for 10 days from flyer delivery.
