Tackling anti-social behaviour in parks
Oakley Creek Walkway is one park with significant alcohol related issues.

If you aren’t aware some of your local parks have an alcohol ban, you will soon find out.

The Albert-Eden Local Board area has evening bans and 24-hour bans in parks with significant alcohol related issues.

Signage has been installed in these parks and some parks on key walking routes will receive upgraded lighting.

Board member Margi Watson says parks that have 24-hour alcohol bans will soon have stencils installed on the footpath to remind visitors they are entering an alcohol-ban area.

Deputy Chair Glenda Fryer says the board would like your help to keep parks safe for everyone.

”You can do this by reporting any drinking, anti-social behaviour and damage. Please also report any disorder as this will help build a picture of what is happening and when,” Fryer says.

There is an instant $250 fine from police if an alcohol ban is breached.

Following assaults on the Oakley Creek Walkway, the board have been working with the NZ Police, Friends of Oakley Creek and Unitec to tackle non-compliance with alcohol bans.

Drinking, vandalism, smashed bottles, campers and random assaults in the area have been an issue, but this will improve as the community and agencies work together.

Report issues to the Crime Reporting Line on 09 302 6400 or text *555 (mobile) but always call 111 for serious behaviour and emergency calls. Vandalism should be reported to police then Auckland Council on 09 301 0101 to be repaired.
