A community planting day has added 2000 native plants to the Ōtara Creek Reserve as part of ongoing environmental restoration to the area.

The event took place in May. It was funded by Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board as part of a strategy by the Placemaking Ōtara Waterways and Lake Steering Group to bring the waterways and lake back to life.

The group has members from several community groups and organisations, including the Tāmaki Estuary Protection Society, Unitec, Watercare, Contact Energy, Ōtara Network Action Committee, the Highbrook Park Trust, Highbrook Rotary and mana whenua.

Two other sites in the Ōtara area are also being replanted with native species and the group is organising planting sessions for local schools where students will get the chance to learn about the waterways.
