Kadimah students discover their whakapapa
Kadimah students have been finding out about their whakapapa at Auckland Libraries' Central Auckland Research Centre.

Every year, intermediate-aged students from Kadimah School on Greys Avenue take a short walk to the city library’s Central Auckland Research Centre to find out more about their roots.

“The researchers at the centre have been amazing, with the children helping them find information about their family histories that even their parents didn’t know,” says Kadimah principal Sue Meltzer.

August is Family History Month

Fostering these personal links with the past is behind Family History Month, which is running at Auckland Libraries in August.

“This year the theme is ‘the melting pot’,” says Seonaid Lewis, family history specialist at Auckland Libraries.

“That’s what Auckland is, and New Zealanders can often trace their ancestry within a few generations to many different places.”

Auckland Family History Expo

One of the highlights will be the Auckland Family History Expo, which will feature international experts and more than 30 exhibitions. The expo runs at the Fickling Convention Centre in Three Kings from 12 to 14 August.
