Decisions and project updates from Auckland Council for the week ending 19 August.

1. Candidates for local body elections were confirmed

There are 468 nominations for the 170 local body positions, including 19 for the mayoralty.

2. The Auckland Unitary Plan was passed

An historic moment in New Zealand planning history was reached on Monday with final decisions completed on the Auckland Unitary Plan. The decisions were released today (Friday). There's now a statutory 20 working day period for limited appeals, which closes on Friday 16 September.

3. Public transport fares got simpler

On Sunday public transport fares got cheaper for most people and the zones got simpler. Auckland Transport also launched a new app and introduced monthly ferry passes to HOP cards.

4. Takapuna Beach Playground opened

The much-anticipated playground opened on Sunday with thousands of people attending the opening.

5. Crackdown on menacing dogs entered new phase

The hunt for unregistered menacing dogs moved into high-risk parts of south Auckland. Animal Management officers started going door-to-door beginning with Randwick Park on Tuesday.
