There are lifejackets to fit all sizes

Water safety experts and suppliers want people to know that larger lifejackets are available and everyone has a right to be safe.

WaterSafe Auckland and lifejacket suppliers are urging anyone heading out to have fun on the water to get the right kit together, including a lifejacket that fits.

"Many guys have their favourite piece of fishing kit, a jacket or hat, and a lifejacket should be considered the same, but anecdotal reports are telling us they are having difficulty finding lifejackets big enough," says WaterSafe Auckland Chief Executive Jonathon Webber.

“A check-in with lifejacket manufacturers and suppliers confirms that larger lifejackets are indeed available, from small to 4XL and made-to-order,” says Jonathon.

Safety at Sea Manager Jonathan Kiygan says a lot of guys need big lifejackets and only need to ask the retailer for help, because it might just save their life.

“I do not recommend buying online as it is essential you are able to try it on,” he says.

“Getting the right fit with the right lifejacket is worth the investment.”

Hutchwilco Sales and Marketing Manager Tim Ritchie suggests guys heading out on the water together should nominate someone who is responsible for the lifejackets, much as you would have a designated driver on the road.

Survitec’s lifejacket size range also goes up to a 4XL which should fit even the biggest Kiwi male, says National Manager Dave Chapman.

"Everyone has a right to be safe no matter their size, they just need to be upfront and ask for help to find a lifejacket that fits," he says.

WaterSafe Auckland operates 29 Pacific church and marae based lifejacket hubs, enabling greater access to lifejackets for men and women of all sizes.
