Watch: Boys thank their rubbish collector with Christmas present

Five-year-old Alexis Goatley’s biggest hero is Terrance, the rubbish collector who passes by in his truck every week.

On a Thursday morning Alexis and his younger brother Xavier bounce out of bed because they know it’s the day Terrance and the truck come.

“From the moment we put the bins out, the boys are fizzing with excitement that they are going to be collected."

"They both love trucks – really love them, so the weekly collection is like a dream come true,” says Richard Goatley, their father.

“They start jumping up and down the moment they hear the truck down the road and get more and more excited as the bin is emptied. Terrance always gives the boys a wave which makes their day. In winter they watch on tip toes on the couch in the lounge, in summer they like to be outside.”

When Alexis asked if he could give Terrance a Christmas card and present to say thank you for collecting their rubbish all year, Richard contacted Auckland Council to arrange.

Touched, Terrance arranged for presents for the two boys which he could reciprocate with.

“They were stoked,” says Richard. “Their hero shook their hands and gave them a present. I’d like to say a big thanks to Terrance and Auckland Council for making their day.”
