Western Springs a pocket of calm for city-dwellers

Western Springs is much loved by Aucklanders and visitors for its beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife.

Auckland Council recognises the significance of the area for both its ecosystem and ecological diversity.

Species that call the area home include native birds and an endangered moss species.

Waitematā and Gulf Ward Councillor Mike Lee says Western Springs is a treasure that well deserves its status as a Significant Ecological Area and an Outstanding Natural Feature in the Auckland Unitary Plan.

“Recent research by ornithologist Dr Brian Gill indicates a remarkable species diversity and abundance at Western Springs, with bird counts showing the importance of the lake for common water birds on the Auckland isthmus,” he says.

“It is exciting to learn that the lake holds many natural values that we have never really appreciated before."

“Western Springs is especially popular with Auckland’s diverse communities. It even has Chinese names – Tian e Hu or Yazi Hu – meaning Swan Lake or Duck Lake.”
