Work to revitalise the Northcote town centre and create affordable housing in the area is now underway.
Panuku Development Auckland is working with the government on a redevelopment plan, and has outlined the four key moves for Northcote.
1. The Town Centre: Creating a vibrant heart
This will bring retail onto Lake Road, create a gateway with a new community building and provide better public spaces.
2. Lake Road: Creating a neighbourhood boulevard
This stage will remodel Lake Road into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard with cycle lanes and wider footpaths. Bus services will also be upgraded.
3. A blue-green way: A network of public open space
This open space through the town centre and neighbourhood will be designed with the community so that it is treasured and cared for by everyone.
4. Housing: Increasing density, choice and tenure mix
The redevelopment of Northcote provides an opportunity to build a variety of different types of housing.
Kaipātiki Local Board Chair Danielle Grant says the Northcote redevelopment is one of the board’s top priorities.
“New planning rules, better market conditions and wider opportunities with partners mean now is the right time for the renewal of Northcote,” she says.
North Shore Ward Councillor Richard Hills agrees: “The project will provide much-needed warm, dry housing, vibrant open spaces, better transport connections, and a town centre design that embraces, enhances and celebrates Northcote’s diversity,” he says.
