Don’t waste these school holidays

Published: 21 April 2017

If you’re looking for fun, low-cost activities that keep the young ones entertained and teach them about waste reduction, we can help!

Download a free Kete

Developed with the local community by Tamaki WRAP, this Waste Wise Kete is a free resource packed with fun activities, waste facts and practical actions for families and children.

The games and activities have been designed by children from the After School Enviro Kids Club in Tamaki and include a colouring-in activity, word games and even a Waste Warrior certificate for those who have completed all the activities.

Funding from Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund was used to develop the book, which can be downloaded

Out with the old, in with the new-to-you

If the children are hassling you for new toys, why not suggest an old-for-new game?

Collect all their unwanted toys and drop off at your local charity shop or community recycling centre so they can be rehomed. Armed with a little small change the children can then choose 'new' toys to replace theirs. Part of the fun is fossicking for a bargain.

Hunt for new treasure or an upcycling project

Our community recycling centres are a delight for the whole family at a very low price point. These places are chock-full of items that have been rescued from landfill – you can pick up a bike or scooter, sports equipment, toys, books and more. Most have upcycled projects on display and will happily share tips on how to make your own.

PS: You can also drop off unwanted second-hand items.

The community recycling centres are in Waiuku, Devonport, Waitakere and Helensville. Find out more

Learn how to recycle right

Auckland’s materials recovery facility in Onehunga, which is where all the region’s recycling is sent, is hosting an educational open day on Saturday 29 April from 9am–2pm. Come along and learn about how recycling is sorted and why it’s important to get it right. Our life size mascots Tin Can and Plastic will be on hand to entertain. More details

WASTE WARRIORS: Bring along a completed Waste Warrior certificate from your Kete and receive a special prize from Tin Can and Plastic!
