During the March water crisis, the benefits of having water storage tanks came into focus, says Albany Ward Councillor Wayne Walker.

“Those with rainwater tanks piped to their houses had them filled during the weather event and were safe from the prospect of having to boil their water if savings targets were not met,” he says.

Cr Walker believes water tanks have multiple benefits. “In one important respect they act as an insurance policy in times of crisis or emergency,” he says.

“On a daily basis, they provide an inexpensive means of keeping our gardens looking great, fruit and vegetables growing nicely, and cars looking shiny. In addition, they help reduce stormwater, thus reducing the chances of flooding and erosion in our communities.”

Greater uptake of water tanks in greenfield development areas could also help ease pressure on our region’s infrastructure, and provide residents a level of security and autonomy, says Cr Walker.
