Don’t let red lights bring out the worst in you

Publish Date : 15 May 2017

It’s no secret – red lights have the ability to turn even the most calm and collected of us into risk-takers.

But Waitemata Road Policing Manager Inspector Trevor Beggs says running a red light is a risk nobody should be willing to take.

“The consequences of choosing to run a red light can be life or death,” he says.

“Increased speed, regardless of vehicle type, puts vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists at greater risk. For them, drivers stopping at red lights and even a small reduction in vehicle speed could save their life.”

People being put in danger

Too many people are dying or being seriously injured at intersections.

In Auckland between 2012 and 2016, intersection crashes due to red light running resulted in the deaths of 4 people, with 75 being seriously injured.

That adds up to a 60 per cent increase in the number of death and serious injury crashes across Auckland during that time.

Working together to improve safety

Auckland Transport is working closely with the NZ Police to improve safety at intersections and to help reduce the number of intersection crashes via enforcement, education and the installation of new red light cameras featuring the latest technology.
