Bunches of bananas aren’t something you’d usually spot hanging on Karangahape Road, but new light-based banana-patterned artworks have sprouted up, bringing a burst of colour and energy to the street.
In the works Don’t Dream it’s Over, artist Janet Lilo has used her striking banana motif and sharp neon elements to illustrate Karangahape Road’s melting pot of history, cultural heritage and community diversity.
Lilo’s works encourage reflection on the street’s journey through change, and both the challenge and reward this has brought.
The artwork is mounted on three six-metre-high light poles on the Karangahape Road overbridge. Up until now the towering poles, which are part of Auckland Council’s public art collection, have featured a pattern-based design by renowned Tongan artist Filipe Tohi.
Don’t Dream it’s Over by Janet Lilo was funded by Auckland Council, and managed and delivered by the Karangahape Road Business Association in partnership with Auckland Council.
