A Planning Leader from Panuku Development Auckland has been recognised for his work on the rejuvenation of Avondale.

Panuku’s Senior Project Planning Leader, John Carter, won the Best Practice Award: District/Strategic Planning and Guidance for the overarching plan he wrote for the area. The award was given by the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI) on Friday 23 March.

The award recognises John’s outstanding creativity, innovation and service to the Avondale community.

The plan was developed as part of the wider Unlock Avondale project which seeks urban regeneration in Avondale over the next 15 years. It includes four key strategic moves including enlivening the town centre, creating high-quality residential neighbourhoods, strengthening transport connections and fostering the growth of local businesses.

In his acceptance speech, John acknowledged the Avondale project director Mike Bush and project sponsor David Rankin. He also recognised Tracy Mulholland and Whau Local Board, as well as Councillor Ross Clow, for their community leadership and support.

“It’s a privilege to be involved in a project like this which is at the forefront of addressing Auckland’s housing and infrastructure cost issues while benefiting the Avondale community,” says John.

“This plan is hugely important to me and the team – the stars are starting to align for Avondale and I think we can pull off something really great.”
