Te Auaunga / Oakley Creek is one of Auckland’s longest urban streams, flowing from Hillsborough through Mt Roskill, Ōwairaka and Waterview to the Waitematā Harbour.
The Albert-Eden Local Board and mana whenua are working in partnership, alongside the local community to restore the mauri or life force of Te Auaunga through kaitiakitanga / guardianship so that it is treasured and respected.
The Vision and Restoration Strategy for the Lower Catchment of Te Auaunga / Oakley Creek outlines the vision of how Albert-Eden Local Board would like to manage this important water catchment now and in the future. It sets out actions across two main themes: restoration and empowerment.
The restoration objectives address sediments, contaminants in the awa and loss of nature around it. In one generation, the strategy aims to achieve an awa that runs clear, even after light rain, where native aquatic life can flourish and where people can swim and wade in.
The strategy expands on how communities can nurture the awa and enhance connectedness with it through stories and science.
The long-term aim is to integrate mātauranga Māori and environmentally sustainable practices to restore Te Auaunga / Oakley Creek so that it is treasured and respected for generations to come.

Albert-Eden residents are welcome to attend an informal session and take the opportunity to contribute to the actions Albert-Eden Local Board are committing to over the next 10 years in order to improve the health of the awa and the communities' connection with it.
