Auckland Council’s Appointments, Performance Review and Value for Money Committee approved two new chair appointments to the boards of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and Regional Facilities Auckland (RFA) at its 2 August meeting.

Following a rigorous selection process, Mark Franklin has been appointed as the new chair of the ATEED Board, and Andrew Barnes has been appointed chair of the RFA board.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff welcomed the new appointments. “I am impressed with the calibre of both appointees. Their significant expertise will be a valuable addition to ATEED and RFA and help bring focus to both organisations’ efforts to deliver value for money to Auckland’s ratepayers.”

Mark Franklin is currently Managing Director of Stevenson Group, a position he has held since early 2010. He was founding Chief Executive of TZ1, the NZX’s global carbon registry, and before that was Chief Executive of Vector.

He is a recent past Director of New Zealand Railways Corporation (KiwiRail) and is a current Director of WEL Networks, UltraFast Broadband and Auckland Chamber of Commerce.

He is also a member of the Auckland Mayoral Housing Taskforce and the Deputy Mayor’s Industry Leaders Council.

Andrew Barnes is a business leader with an extensive background in governance, philanthropy and in the financial industry. He is the founder of Perpetual Guardian, which formed through the coming together of Perpetual Trust and Guardian Trust.

He is also founder and director of Complectus Limited, which own Perpetual Guardian and subsequently acquired a number of other trust businesses, making it the largest Statutory Supervisor and Trustee group in New Zealand.

Andrew was previously a director and founder of Just Wills Holdings Limited, a UK-based will writing and estate planning business. Before that he was CEO of Bestinvest, a US$5.7billion, UK-based investment management and advisory company, and held a number of leadership roles in the UK and Australia at Australian Wealth Management, Tower, Citibank and Macquarie Bank.

Both appointments will take effect from 1 November 2018.

The Appointments, Performance Review and Value for Money Committee is responsible for all board appointments to substantive council-controlled organisations.
