Work has now begun on the Sandspit Reserve seawall upgrade and beach replenishment.

Land Sea and Civil Limited, the contractor engaged to undertake the works on behalf of Auckland Council, began work on 20 August. The project comprises of an upgrade of the existing boat ramp, beach replenishment with imported sand, construction of a hardwood timber boardwalk with stairs accessing the beach, a timber pier and a concrete stepped seawall near the yacht club.

The project is expected to be complete by late summer 2019 or earlier if practical, which means the playground and barbeques in the area will be closed and fenced off.

While construction will create some disruption, Franklin Local Board member Sharlene Druyven asks for locals to be patient, as work can only occur at low tide and in the long run, the seawall and beach amenities will be better suited to the needs of the area.

“I think people will be really pleased once work is completed as they will have facilities that are ‘fit for purpose’ as well as being visually more appealing.“
