Waiheke Island Local Board deputy chair Paul Walden has been granted a leave of absence for two months.

Auckland Council this week served five charges for unconsented work on his property under the Building Act 2004 and Resource Management Act 1991.

His place has been taken by John Meeuwsen, who also chairs the Hauraki Gulf Forum.

Board chair Cath Handley says because the matter is before the court, it would be inappropriate to comment.

A first appearance hearing has been scheduled for 18 September at the Auckland District Court.
