Next steps for Mairangi Bay Beach Reserves

Ensuring that future generations can enjoy a day on Mairangi Bay’s beach reserves is proving no picnic for Hibiscus and Bays Local Board.

But deputy chair Janet Fitzgerald wouldn’t have it any other way, and she wants to ensure the estimated $5 million worth of development projects deliver maximum benefit for the area.

Because of their complexity, the local board has adopted a development plan to prioritise and coordinate projects identified in the Mairangi Bay Reserves Management Plan.

“Each project will take several years,” she says.

“There will be further community engagement and work with stakeholders, so having a development plan makes good sense.

“This is land entrusted to us and we need to ensure our reserves are developed to maximise open space. We’ll create a continuous, connected green space that can be used for different activities.”

The Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club upgrade and a pump station upgrade by Watercare are funded from other sources, leaving the local board to advocate for funding for:

  • Montrose Terrace carpark and Link Lane – $685,000 estimate
  • Montrose Terrace and Sidmouth Street cul-de-sacs – $1.2 million estimate
  • Montrose Terrace (Beachfront Road removal) – $355,000 estimate
  • Reserve amenity enhancements – $580,000 estimate
  • Pedestrian bridge enhancements – $105,000 estimate
  • Seawall renewal – $2.34 million estimate.

Details of the projects with approximate timelines can be found in the Mairangi Bay Beach Reserves Development Plan.
