School children in Howick will be enjoying freshly picked fruit for many years to come, thanks to Howick Local Board’s Healthy Howick Fruit Trees in Schools programme.

Twenty-five schools in the local board area will each receive 12 fruit trees, with experts from Kings Plant Barn Botany helping to plant the trees to ensure they thrive.

Fruit tree varieties to be planted include plums, apples, mandarins, feijoas and oranges, so there’ll be something for everyone to enjoy when the trees start fruiting.

Howick Local Board member Katrina Bungard says, “The local board has made a commitment through our local board plan to promote the health and well-being of our community."

“Healthy Howick is all about helping to create partnerships in our community to bring businesses, social agencies, community groups and schools together, to ensure our community is supported and empowered and that everyone can lead active and healthy lifestyles.”
