The Dolphin Theatre in Onehunga has been providing entertainment since 1962 and it doesn’t show any sign of slowing down soon.
“We believe that part of the Dolphins success is in the variety of ages that are embraced by the theatre,” says Claire Nelson, President of the Dolphin Theatre.
“Not only are those involved in producing and acting in the performances such a mix, but we actively involve our senior community members through direct invitations and events dedicated just to them. We are proud to make local theatre accessible for all.”
Local board support
The Dolphin Theatre was recently awarded a grant from Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board to help cover production and royalty costs, as a show of support from the board for the work that the theatre does making art accessible for the community.
The theatre produces six main shows per year and upwards of 6000 patrons attend the shows. Other regular features include a biennial ‘One Act Play Festival’ which provides an outlet for less popular or lesser known works to be experienced. The theatre also hosts gala evenings as a means of fundraising for community groups.
The building has been around since the 1960s and underwent significant improvements in the 1980s. The theatre has remained in excellent condition since and is regularly hired out as a venue to school and community groups and the building is well utilized in that capacity.
