Have your say on the future of Ōrewa Reserve

Residents are being asked to give feedback on plans to restore the dunes, create a sandy beach area, and relocate some facilities at Ōrewa Reserve.

Each of the plan’s four options helps protect the reserve from rising sea levels and climate change. Feedback is open until 9 May.

Hibiscus and Bays Local Board chairperson Alexis Poppelbaum says that all the concept options include dune restoration and will improve access to the beach.

"Beach visitors want easy access to play in the sand and swim in the sea. The aim is to create a gentle slope through the dunes to the beach, replacing the sharp drop caused by erosion.

“Over time, the restored dunes will resemble those at the southern end of the beach near the holiday park,” she says.

There are plans to relocate the reserve’s facilities outside of the coastal hazard zone, such as the beachfront toilet and changing rooms, which moves to the north side of the surf lifesaving club’s new building:

Option A includes large car parks, different play experiences, a basketball court and shade shelter.

Option B includes a car park area, a new toilet block, a large grass area for games, picnics, events and overflow parking, two playgrounds, two fitness zones, a basketball court and shade shelter.

Option C includes a car park area, a new toilet block, a large grass area for games, picnics, events and overflow parking, two playgrounds, a basketball and volleyball court, public toilets and changing rooms.

Option D includes a car park, a basketball and volleyball court, a fitness zone, public toilets, and a large destination playground.

Poppelbaum says, “Residents should take the time to read the information on the consultation website, as each option is shown there.

"They can share their preferred concept option, how often they visit the reserve, what features are most important, and any other feedback."

Residents can view the options and give feedback online at akhaveyoursay.nz, via email communityconsultation@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or post to Ōrewa Reserve, Auckland Council, Private Bag 92300, Victoria Street West, Auckland 1142.

More information about the Ōrewa Reserve Future Management project is available on the council website.
