There will be safer connections for Glen Innes and Onehunga following the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board investment of $640,000 to improve road safety.

The board has provided additional funding for two existing projects – Onehunga Mall / Grey Street roundabout intersection upgrade and Eastview Low Traffic area – to create a safer environment for drivers and pedestrians.

The Onehunga Mall/Grey St intersection upgrade provides a new roundabout, cycle ramp, zebra crossing and shared path at the busy intersection, while the Eastview work includes traffic islands, road layout changes to reduce speed and broken yellow lines to improve visibility for motorists.

Local Board Chair Maria Meredith says road safety and improved connections are a high priority for the board.

“It’s important the community feels safe when travelling around our local board areas, and it’s great we can allocate these funds to Eastview and Onehunga so that safer connections are available for those walking and biking around the area.
“We’ve already done comprehensive consultation on the Eastview changes, and it’s clear there is a need for a safer environment with the nearby St Pius and Glen Innes School.”

Auckland Transport will progress into the design phase for both projects, with the work expected to be completed between now and June 2026.
