Stage 1: Beautifying Māngere Town Centre is LIVE!

Māngere Town Centre’s beautification project is now officially underway, thanks to $5,000 in funding from the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board, along with advocacy from local community groups and the Māngere Town Centre business improvement district.

The project aims to transform the area into a more vibrant and welcoming space.

This exciting initiative will not only boost the look and feel of the town centre inside but also attract more visitors and businesses, creating a thriving hub for the community.

Board chair Tauanu’u Nick Bakulich shares, “The community has embraced the improved space within the town centre (the new seating, the picnic tables, turf area, and the stage too). We have received amazing feedback as the space has been transformed into a more welcoming environment. Change in this town centre has long been anticipated, and we're proud to be part of it.
“In June 2023, the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board approved the 2023/2024 community grant budget, specifically for projects that align with Revitalising the Town Centre. This funding brings our shared vision of a thriving, vibrant community to reality. Well done to everyone involved and especially those who advocated for it.”

The reveal

Vicky Hau, the town centre manager adds, “One of the goals that we had for our bid was to revitalise the town centre. And this project is the start of it,” Hau says. “I didn't want to change it too much, because it's quite a landmark for us. It just needed a little bit of teamwork here. The local mamas were very, very, very excited…Just the glow, the light on their face when I had said to them, hey, on the 31st, we’re going to have some new tables, new chairs…Even when I said a new stage and they all lit up.”

Fresh updates bring:

  • Custom-built planter box bench seats, filled with beautiful birds of paradise to enhance the space.
  • A new turf area with seating and picnic tables for the community to enjoy.
  • A full-service pressure wash, leaving the floors spotless.
