Aucklanders are being given the chance to discover the joy of lifelong learning this Adult Learners’ Week He Tangata Mātauranga (7 – 13 September) through more than 70 free events and workshops across Auckland Council Libraries, encouraging Aucklanders to pick up an old hobby or discover something new entirely.
From learning a new language and taking a cooking class to developing business skills, exploring creative stop-motion storytelling, improving writing skills, sketching or trying harakeke raranga (Māori flax weaving), all are free events that offer something for everyone. It is one of many initiatives funded by rates and delivered by Auckland Council.
Aucklanders are encouraged to browse the full programme and register for events that inspire them.
This year’s theme of Finding Our Voice - Ko tōku reo, ko tōku ohooho! encourages people to discover how lifelong learning can help Aucklanders find their voice through self-determination, find new ways to express themselves, share their stories and uncover the power of the collective voice in communities.
Councillor Julie Fairey, Chair of Auckland Council’s Community Committee says Adult Learners’ Week reflects the important role libraries play in strengthening communities.
“Our libraries are thriving community hubs where people come together to learn, create, share ideas and make meaningful connections. The incredible range of events offered during Adult Learners’ Week highlights the diversity of interests, experiences and cultures that make Tāmaki Makaurau such a vibrant place to live.

This year, Adult Learners’ Week celebrates 40 years internationally and 25 years in Aotearoa with the support of Adult and Community Education (ACE) Aotearoa, which aims to celebrate learner success, highlight the benefits of community education and encourage learning accessibility for all.
