Windmill Pavilion Reopening

The reopening of Windmill Pavilion was recently celebrated following a major upgrade by Auckland Council and its contractors.

The facility is part of Windmill Park, a popular sports and recreation space governed by Albert-Eden Local Board and leased to Auckland Netball.

It’s now dressed ready to impress for the 2024 season with a newly upgraded kiosk and covered space, toilet facilities, first aid room and storage.

Board chair, Kendyl Smith is delighted for the netball community and other users of Windmill Park.

“We are thrilled to see this facility brought back to life for one of our most popular parks,” says chair Smith.
“Delivering high quality facilities, which meet a range of needs and ensuring our community can live healthy and active lifestyles are key objectives for the local board.

“The pavilion building has served the netball community for many decades; however, it had a number of structural and seismic issues which have now been addressed and we are very pleased to return this facility to the community.

“I’d like to give a huge thank you to council parks and community facilities staff who worked on this project and completed in the nick of time for netball season.”

“We’ve worked really closely with Auckland Netball on this project, and we’ve recently renewed the lease to them so we know it will be well-looked after and cared for.”

With more than 50,000 visitors for netball alone in 2023, Windmill Park is a well-used sports and recreation park that has been hugely important to netball and tennis since the 1930s, as well as other sports.

From 1932 until 2006, Windmill Road Netball courts was the original home of Auckland Netball before the organisation moved to new facilities at Ngahue Reserve in St Johns.

“We are very excited about the developments at Windmill Road which will enable us to continue to grow and provide opportunities for the local community,” says Auckland Netball CEO Dianne Lasenby.

“Modernising the building and facilities will be hugely beneficial for locals and everyone who uses Windmill Road as their home courts,” Lasenby says.
