Sailing will be on Waitemata Harbour

Some of the world’s best sailors are heading to Auckland in December for the 2019 Hyundai 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships.

We are expecting 400 sailors to attend the event at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club, including Olympic and four-time world champions Peter Burling and Blair Tuke as well as former 49erFX world champions Alex Maloney and Molly Meech.

As you might expect, it will be a busy time, and many international sailors have already arrived to begin their buildup. The world championships will be from December 3-8 but there will also be a buildup regatta, the Oceania Championships, from November 25-27.

We’d love for you to come down and get a taste of what the world championships will be all about, because many countries will be using the event as a selection regatta for next year’s Tokyo Olympics. It will also be a fantastic opportunity to see our top sailors in action on home waters.

The opening ceremony will be on the evening of December 1 at 6.00pm and we invite the public to come to The Landing and watch.

You are also welcome to come down to the new Hyundai Marine Sports Centre to get closer to the action.

Sailors will launch at various times during the day and the new Akarana Eatery is open and is a great venue to stop for a coffee or meal with friends and watch the daily action unfold.

Each day after racing the bar is open and there will also be a live debrief with guest experts analysing the day’s racing and movements on the leaderboard.

If you can’t make it down, you can catch the action live on Sky Sport for all six days of the world championships.

The Okahu Bay boat ramp will be closed to the public for launching from Nov 25 - Dec 10 but during this time you can still launch your boat at one of the following ramps:

  • Outboard Boating Club (subject to prior safety check, see
  • Tamaki Yacht Club
  • Westhaven Marina
  • Kohimarama Beach
  • St Heliers Beach.
