The Bike Challenge is back this February!

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a free, fun competition that aims to get more people cycling more often - for fun, exercise or to work.

Teams will earn points for riding and for recruiting new members. The competition is based primarily on numbers of staff taking part, but points will also be awarded for the number of trips taken and distance ridden.

Imagine if more people rode bikes in New Zealand - our air would be cleaner, our cities would be more peaceful and our streets would be safer.

Studies have shown that places with higher numbers of riders have fewer accidents per rider: increased participation leads to greater visibility and awareness and makes bicycling safer for everyone.

How does it work?

Follow these four steps:

  • Register on this website, it's free.

The challenge is simple. Register as an individual under Auckland Council’s team page, and join your Local Board department team.

  • Ride a bike anywhere, anytime for at least 10 minutes during the Challenge (1-29 February)

Hop on a bike for at least 10 minutes and earn points to participate, and win Auckland region and national prizes! (Remember you can log a ride at any time, but you’ll only earn points for riding in February.)

  • Record your ride on this site and tell your friends and coworkers about the Challenge.

You and your team earn points for every kilometre you ride, every day you ride, and for every person you encourage to sign-up. You'll compete against other teams of comparable sizes. The points system has been carefully selected to ensure a fair and exciting competition, and to strongly encourage teams to engage new riders if they want to climb the leaderboard and secure victory!

  • Reward yourself and your friends by winning prizes!

There are heaps of great prizes to be won in the next few months as well spot prizes and challenge champion prizes during and after February. Prizes will be awarded to the top folks in the individual leaderboard categories and some lucky participants will win for certain activities including encouraging other to ride or logging trips. The more often you log rides and encourage others to log their rides, the more likely you are to win a prize!

Fundraise with Variety

Looking for more reasons to ride? Why not turn your passion towards a good cause, and raise money for Variety’s Bikes for Kids Programme. Set up your individual page, commit your organization to giving for every kilometre ridden, or make a one-off donation to help give a Kiwi kid their very own bike and helmet. Every $250 dollars raised gives one disadvantaged Kiwi kid a brand-new bike and helmet.

There will also be heaps of bike-friendly events happening in February, so keep up to date on the Auckland Transport Facebook Page to see what’s coming up!
