How well do you know Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland by foot?
Do you know which suburb has more than its fair share of prime ministers, artists and change makers? Have you learned the significance of Te Tauoma to Māori? Do you know where the best urban bush spots in Henderson are? Have you ever wondered what makes Avondale tick or what poets see when they look at Takapuna?
This autumn some of Auckland’s most enthusiastic city-lovers will share the answers to these questions and many more in free walking tours through Auckland's many and varied neighbourhoods.
From 22 April to 16 May we invite you to join us in an Auckland-wide festival of urban walking. A festival that revolves around local people celebrating their place, sharing what makes it special and advocating for what they love about it through walking and conversation.
The Urban Walking Festival is packed with walks all around Tāmaki Makaurau. At the heart of the festival are 33 walks hosted by city-loving guides and local residents who will share the stories, beloved experiences and hidden gems of their local neighbourhood. This extensive programme includes urban hikes, guided tours, sensory explorations and opportunities to dance.
Alongside the walks is a stimulating programme of talks and films reflecting on walking in the city. These include a storytelling evening showcasing amazing writers telling true tales of walking during lockdown, a film screenings of Citizen Jane in Aotea Square 38 Hurstmere, Takapuna’s pop up community square and a selection of creative short films delving into the heart of walking.

This festival is brought to you by Panuku Development Auckland and Auckland Transport.
