Te Wānanga (the new downtown public space) is the new space near the ferry terminal, Auckland waterfront. Exact location will be advised on booking

Join two of the kaitiaki (guardians) managing the new coastal grove plantings within Te Wānanga and Quay Street, as they discuss the aspirations of mana whenua who have been involved in the design of these spaces and the position, function and inter-relationships of these plantings.

Through the active and ongoing management of these plantings; Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei are firmly and clearly expressing their mana whenua, their ahi-kā-tanga and kaitiakitanga.

A unique design partnership between Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland Council, Auckland Transport and Mana whenua has introduced a new coastal grove palette of native plant species that offer a thicker biodiversity which also brings both habitat and kai for fauna to these projects.

These plantings recognise and provide for the cultural, environmental, and social ecologies of this place, and bring both mana and mauri to this part of Tāmaki Makaurau and Te Waitemata.

This event is brought to you by Auckland Council and the City Centre Targeted Ratepayers.

Guided by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei kaitiaki: Etienne Neho / Jyde Tamaariki.
