Finance and Performance Committee approves Te Henga land transfer

Auckland Council’s Finance and Performance Committee today considered a number of items, including the budget to conduct a by-election, and the transfer of the land at 240A Bethells Road, Te Henga to Te Kawerau a Maki.

Items 1-4, 7-8 and 12-14 were administrative items.

Item 5 Public input

Bill Buckley and Greg Mosen addressed the committee about the relocation of Speedway to Colin Dale Park.

Item 6 – Local Board input

Chris Makoare and Debbie Burrows from the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board addressed the committee on the options for relocation of Speedway from Western Springs to Colin Dale Motorsport Park, Wiri and Waikaraka Park.

Sandra Coney from the Waitakere Ranges Local Board Chair presented on matters relating to Item 11, 240A Bethells Beach Te Henga – Kainga Whakahirahira.

Item 9: Budget to conduct by-election

The committee approved additional budget of $229,400 for a Howick Ward by-election following the passing of Councillor Dick Quax.

Item 10: Extension of Te Puru Community Charitable Trust Council-Controlled Organisation Exemption

The committee approved extending the exemption from council-controlled organisation requirements for the Te Puru Community Charitable Trust to 2021.

Item 11: 240A Bethells Beach Te Henga - Kāinga Whakahirahira

The committee approved the transfer of the land at 240A Bethells Road, Te Henga to Te Kawerau ā Maki for the purpose of constructing a marae and papakāinga. Read more on Our Auckland.

Committee Chair, Councillor Ross Clow, says:

“This is an important decision that takes the next step in what has been a long, ongoing journey to this point. Transferring the land will enable Te Kawerau ā Maki to develop a marae and papakāinga at Te Henga, which will be a fantastic outcome for the community.

“I want to acknowledge Sir Bob Harvey, former Mayor of Waitakere, who I am sure is as delighted by this decision as I am.”
