New Onehunga shared path now open

Moving around Onehunga just got a lot easier!

Onehunga’s new cycle network is officially open and in place for summer.

The 1km shared path links Onehunga Bay Reserve and the recently developed Onehunga foreshore to the town centre.

Previously the footpath stopped outside Mitre 10. Now, the new 3m-wide path runs along Beachcroft Ave, from the corner of Wharangi St to the roundabout at Church St.

The $360,000 new path was funded by Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board and delivered by Auckland Transport. It is part of a greater strategy to support better cycling and walking investment in the area.

Local Board chair Simon Randall says there will be high demand for better facilities in the area as the path is across the road from a planned special housing area and close to Onehunga High School.

Puketapapa Active Transport Haven chair Richard Barter says the path is part of a network that will eventually allow people to travel to Sylvia Park, Mangere foreshore and to the northwestern cycle route.
