Rules around home pools this summer

New rules around home pools this summer

Summer is a great time for a splash in the pool, but pool ownership comes with responsibilities.

The government repealed the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 effective from 1 January 2017.

Rules around pools are part of the Building Act 2004. You still need a fence or other complying barrier for existing and new pools.

All councils must now check pool barriers and fences at least every three years. Auckland Council already does this.

Some shallow inflatable pools don’t need a fence if the water level is less than 40cm deep. But it’s crucial you still supervise young children and empty the pool after use.

See the Auckland Council website for more information, and call 09 301 0101 if you would like any advice.
