This week, Auckland-based Taiwan Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, with the assistance of Auckland Civil Defence, sent essential aid and supplies to quake-affected Hurunui and Kaikoura.
Councillor Sharon Stewart, chair of Auckland’s Civil Defence Committee, says, “It is heartening to see so many people stepping up to help.
“The level of support has been astounding. The foundation has raised $125,000 for the community and donated 500 1.5l bottles of water, 30 eco-blankets and 50 dinner sets.
“The recent earthquake caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, and it is wonderful to see communities are supporting each other through these challenges.”
It is important to remember that disaster can strike anywhere and at any time.
“I would encourage everyone to take time out to talk to their family, plan where to go and what to do, talk to their neighbours and think about those around us who may need our help during an emergency,” says Councillor Stewart.
