A new playground soon to be built at Milford Reserve may bring back memories for some residents of Milford and Castor Bay.

In line with the Milford Centre Plan and the wishes of local residents’ and business associations, the playground will have a pirate ship theme, referencing the Milford ‘Pirate Shippe’ building that stood in the reserve from 1929 to 1957.

'Incredibly popular destination'

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Grant Gillon says, “The old Pirate Shippe was an incredibly popular North Shore destination. It was large, shaped like a ship and had dance halls, tea rooms and a restaurant. It’s great to be delivering a new playground that reflects Milford’s rich history.”

Work will start in April with the removal of old play equipment.

The new playground will feature equipment suitable for a wider range of ages and abilities.
