Update on cabling at Albany Stadium Pool

No immediate risk to public safety

Auckland Council has been advised by WorkSafe there is no immediate risk to public safety from a type of cabling used by Lyon Electrical, a company contracted to carry out electrical work at Albany Stadium Pool.

Rob McGee, the council’s Head of Active Recreation, said, “We take health and safety very seriously. If WorkSafe had identified a risk to people using the centre, we would have closed it immediately.”

“This week the council’s contractor will be carrying out an audit on the building to see the extent of where this cabling has been used, if at all.”

“We have been advised that the cable used by Lyon Electrical since mid-2016 lasts three to five years instead of the usual 45 years, and the cable at Albany Stadium Pool was installed a year ago.

“The pool had already been scheduled for maintenance in October and we hope to schedule any works to address any wiring fixes needed during this time. In the meantime, we will continue to follow the advice of WorkSafe, and people can continue to safely enjoy the facility.”
