Ancient lava flow inspires Freyberg Place design

Freyberg Place has been brought back to life following a major upgrade led by Auckland Council. It has been transformed into a fabulous open space to relax and enjoy the sunshine in the central city.

The square’s makeover includes concrete terraced seating, a new water feature and native planting set around an open plaza that is designed for events. The design, led by Isthmus Group Ltd in with New Zealand artist John Reynolds, is a sight to behold.

The steps and platforms cascade down the hill as a lava flow once did in that spot, with a ‘stream’ running through and native planting paying homage to the nīkau palm grove that once stood there.

For the kids there are climbing trees, stepping stones in the water and paths weaving up the hill providing opportunities for play and discovery.

The terraced area has access at multiple levels for viewing events on the square, and a new shared space on Courthouse Lane will easily connect pedestrians from Freyberg Place to Chancery Square.

The statue of Lord Freyberg, New Zealand’s seventh governor-general, also returned to the area and holds a prominent position within the terraces, welcoming people to Freyberg Place.
