Councillors take time to shakeout and get ready

Councillors Sharon Stewart and Desley Simpson were among Auckland Council Governing Body members who took part in New Zealand ShakeOut yesterday.

Ahead of yesterday's Governing Body meeting, councillors ‘dropped, covered and held’ – the right action to take in the event of an earthquake.

Chair of the Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group Committee, Cr Stewart says while a bit of fun the national drill is a serious reminder that with New Zealand being at risk of earthquakes and our coastlines at risk of a tsunami, everyone needs to be prepared and know what to do.

“Mother nature is unpredictable so it’s really important we are prepared with things like signing up for alerts, having an evacuation plan in place and understanding the risks in your community.”

Go to the Auckland Emergency Management website at aucklandcivildefence.org.nz to find out more and to sign up for text alerts and view tsunami evacuation maps.
