A long-awaited $100,000 upgrade of the Waiuku skate park will ensure this much-loved recreation space benefits the community for many years to come.

The popular hang-out spot along Waiuku’s main road has needed a spruce up for many years.

The park has been expanded and enhanced thanks to Franklin Local Board and the Waiuku Lions along with input from local users. It’s not only well-suited for skateboarders but will also be fit-for-purpose for the large number of scooter riders that frequent it.

An example of community collaboration

Franklin Local Board member Brendon Crompton says it is another example of the community and local board forging successful partnerships, with the Waiuku Lions Club and a collective of skate and scooter enthusiasts working together to plan, fund and build an upgraded skate park.

“Waiuku more than any other community in Auckland has grabbed on to the council concept of empowered communities and run with it."

"We have a wonderful number of community groups alongside the Lions such as the Mudlarks, the Waiuku Walkways Group and the Waterfront Committee providing great community services to this area.”
