New Auckland councillor Paul Young was officially sworn in as a representative of Howick Ward by Mayor Phil Goff at the meeting of Auckland Council’s Governing Body on 27 September.
To mark the occasion, a Chinese cultural performance, arranged by Councillor Young, was held before the official ceremony. Councillor Young made his statutory declaration and addressed a meeting crowded with family, friends, supporters and fellow councillors.
In his maiden speech, Councillor Young acknowledged Councillor Dick Quax and the contribution he made to Howick Ward and to Auckland. He also spoke of his own commitment to Auckland and to supporting migrant communities.
“Nearly 24 per cent of Aucklanders identify as Asian and it’s important this is reflected in the diversity of this Governing Body. I’m proud to represent my Asian-Kiwi ward but first and foremost I’m an Auckland councillor and will strive to serve all Aucklanders.
“Encouraging integration of new migrants into New Zealand society and enabling them to make a valuable contribution is important. It’s good for our city as a whole and I am committed to engaging people from a wide range of backgrounds.
“A priority is also transport opportunities for east Auckland including the Eastern Busway Project,” says Councillor Young.
Mayor Phil Goff congratulated Councillor Young in becoming the newest member of Auckland Council’s Governing Body, highlighting his ever-present commitment to the community and welcoming his election as building a more representative governing body.
“Paul has always shown a rugged determination to become an elected representative of his local community and today he fulfills that dream.
“I know he has worked hard to get here and that he will continue that hard work and treasure the privilege and the honour it is for all of us to be a representative of our community.
“Paul probably understands more than many the challenges faced by those who come to make their future lives in this country.
“Having Paul on this council will make us richer in representing the diversity of Auckland. I welcome Paul’s election as building a more representative governing body that better reflects the communities we serve,” says Mayor Goff.
Councillor Young was elected as a Howick Ward councillor on 13 September 2018 after winning a by-election held to fill the vacancy left after the passing of Councillor Dick Quax in May of this year.
