The Auckland Transport Community Bike Fund is now open for applications, with funding available to community groups to support cycling initiatives and projects.

Kathryn King, AT’s Walking, Cycling and Road Safety Manager, says the fund supports the work of community groups that champion bike riding in the region.

“Many community organisations have great ideas to get more people on their bikes, and we are keen to work with them to deliver some creative projects that encourage more people to ride bikes more often.

“We are really committed to promoting cycling as a transport choice and by enabling these groups, we hope even more people will consider riding a bike as a great option to get around Auckland and really activate our cycling infrastructure,” she says.

“Previous fund recipients have delivered wonderful events and programmes for their communities and we look forward to receiving applications for this next round of funding.”

Grants of up to $5000 are available for community groups and applications are open until Sunday 3 March 2019.

Last year For the Love of Bees received a grant to host bike tours around the city’s community gardens to show participants the importance of creating bee-friendly spaces in Auckland.

“Bikes are a great way to showcase our various sites which are scattered mostly across the inner city. Participants love discovering hidden green pockets in their own city and learning about how these spaces are contributing to a climate ready future,” says Biking Bees coordinator Greer Juul Rasmussen.

“Having a paid coordinator who can bring all our collaborators together, plan and execute the ride is a huge help. Funding also allows us to bring on board biological gardening experts and beekeepers to share their knowledge with participants,” she says.
