Two electric vehicle chargers have been installed at Devonport Wharf Carpark. The chargers are free to use for a twelve-month trial period, starting this Friday, 29 March.

They are AC 'medium chargers' and have a maximum capability of adding 40km driving range from 30 minutes charging.

North Shore ward councillor Chris Darby sees the new chargers as a timely step towards the new energy future, "Along with great public transport, walking and cycling, electric vehicles or EVs will play a critical role in our transport future.

"Devonport's new EV chargers contribute to the infrastructure network required to support the fast-emerging electric transport future and the forecast rapid uptake of EVs."

AT's Executive General Manager of Business Technology, Roger Jones says "These chargers are part of a 'Smart Cities' trial that AT is running in Devonport.

"AT has already installed 48 EV chargers at our carparks across Auckland. However, these chargers in Devonport are different as they also include environmental data monitoring, parking sensors, Wi-Fi stations and adaptive lighting."

First-time users of the chargers will need to register for an EV charge card from Devon on The Wharf restaurant in the ferry building. Once registered, this card can be used as many times as you like.

Customers will need to bring their own 'Type 2' charging cable. You can find more info on charging cables here.

The chargers are available 24 hours a day from 6am on Friday. Devon on The Wharf restaurant is open from 6am until late Monday to Friday and from 8am on weekends.

The electric vehicle chargers are not related to the AT Local trial also being carried out in Devonport.
