Last chance to have your say on sports investment plan

Published: 1 April 2019

Auckland Council wants Aucklanders to help shape a new investment strategy aimed at getting more people active and involved in community sport.

Consultation closes on 8 April 2019.

Rapid growth and social change are changing the face of Auckland, creating an opportunity to build a stronger, more diverse and inclusive society. Community sport is a key part of this vision.

The council has developed a plan to encourage this – Increasing Aucklanders’ Participation in Sport: Investment Plan 2019-2039 and change the way we invest in sport to get more Aucklanders more active more often. Today, the plan has been released for public consultation.

It is not always easy for everyone to participate in sport. There are specific groups who are not involved in any kind of sport or have consistently low levels of participation. The plan aims to address this.

The new investment strategy uses a people-centric approach focusing on:

  • communities with low sport participation rates
  • increasing participation in emerging and ethnically diverse sports
  • sustaining popular sports with high participation rates.

New funding will be delivered through a contestable $120 million Sport and Recreation Facilities Investment Fund which is in addition to the $1 billion Auckland Council already invests in parks, sport, recreation.

“Changes to the way people participate and play sport, as well as the sports they play are driving different kinds of demand on our network of traditional, code-based sporting facilities, says Chair of the Environment and Community Committee Councillor Penny Hulse.

“Community sport can bring people together in both organised and casual environments, improving health, social and cultural outcomes for all Aucklanders,” says Ms Hulse.
