Onehunga based art gallery and creative shared space, The 312 Hub, is a place where youth lead through four values: Community, Change, Creativity and Culture, and the overarching vision of ‘Onehunga being a place for young people in Tāmaki Makaurau’.

“The city is changing at such a fast pace that projects like The 312 Hub are important in making sure that local youth are part of the process, that they have ownership of what is happening in their own neighbourhood,” says Chris Makoare, Chair of Maungakiekie Tāmaki Local Board.

Laura Haitoua, The 312 Hub Gallery and Events Coordinator explains that: “we provide a space which helps unite our voices so that we can be heard by the decision makers, so that they come to us seeking advice and input."

Among the many offerings at The 312 Hub are programmes such as Back 2 Basics, a 10-week after-school creative arts ‘hack’ school designed specifically to increase the skills and knowledge in the arts, towards better opportunities in the creative industries.

“We work towards improving the skills of our community through training opportunities and empowerment projects.”

Maungakiekie Tāmaki Local Board helps to support The 312 Hub in various ways.  Most recently by approving grants for a PA system and for the Back 2 Basics programme.

“We have been supporting this project for over two years. Each year The 312 Hub representatives present to the local board in such a professional and energetic manner, which shows how important the project is,” says Makoare.
