Matariki Festival Diary: Food

The Matariki Festival 2019 programme has been released, with over 100 events running all over Auckland between 22 June and 14 July. 

To help pick out the highlights for you, we've put together the Matariki Diary grouping together different types of events. 

Check out this selection of happenings boasting delicious kai over the festival period. 

Hāngi at Britomart

When: 25-30 June. Lunchtime hāngi, evening gatherings.
Where: Takutai Square, Britomart, CBD

To celebrate Matariki, the team from The Māori Kitchen is digging up the lawn in Britomart’s Takutai Square and layingdown a hāngi. They’ll be serving the best kai and hosting a Guitar Party, where you can sample great food and drink and listen to waiata sung by some of Aotearoa’s most exciting musical talent.

Guitar Party Singalong: Fri 28 June, 5pm; free.

Matariki Dish

When: 1 July – 7 July
Where: Devonport restaurants

There’s no better way to celebrate the Matariki season than with kai reka around the tēpu. Devonport’s restaurants will be serving up phenomenal Matariki dishes using native New Zealand flavours and ingredients. Think wild pork, smoked eel, mānuka-smoked hāpuka and pikopiko.

See in the Māori new year with succulent flavours and fantastic times in Devonport. Matariki Dish is part of Elemental AKL.

Matariki on the Waterfront

Where: Silo Park, Wynyard Quarter, cnr Beaumont and Jellicoe St
